Youth held for FB post on PM
Police arrested a young man from Lalpukur village of Tanore upazila on Saturday night for posting derogatory comments about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on his Facebook wall.
The arrestee was identified as Rashikul Islam, 30, son of Sadikul Islam of the village.
Police arrested Rashidul following a case filed by Abdul Gaffar, president of 9 no ward Awami League in Panchndar union parishad filed a case under ICT Act 57 at night as Rashidul posted derogatory remarks against Prime Minister on Friday, said Rezaul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tanore Police Station.
Businessman held in graft case
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Sunday arrested a businessman from the capital in a graft case.
ACC assistant director Sirajul Haque arrested proprietor of Asa Enterprise Awlad Hossain from the capital’s Segunbaghicha area, ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told UNB.
On October 5, the ACC filed a case against him with Bandar Police Station of Chittagong city for allegedly dodging government revenue of nearly Tk 20 lakh.
Rajshahi Jamaat leader arrested
Police arrested a leader of Jamaat-e-Islami from Mahishbathan area in the city on early Monday.
Kamruzaman Sohel, secretary of Rajpara unit Jamaat and son of Belal Hossian of the area, was accused in 14 cases, including sabotage, said Hafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Rajpara Police Station.
Tipped-off, police conducted a drive in Mahishbathan area of the city in the early hours of the day and arrested the Jamaat leader. He will be produced before a court here in the afternoon, the police official added.
2 held with yaba in Barisal
Police arrested two men along with 860 pieces of yaba from Pingalkathi Bazar and Paschim Dumuria villages of Barisal on Sunday night.
The arrestees were identified as Md Idris Barkandaj, son of Ayub Ali Barkandaz, a resident of Ramzanpur village in Kalkini upazila, and Sarwer Hossain Palash, son of Delwar Hossain Bepari of Madaripur district.
On secret information, police conducted drives and arrested Idris along with 500 pieces of yaba tablet from Pingalkathi village and Palash along with 360 pieces of yaba from Paschim Dumuria village at night.
Book on Alakesh Ghosh launched
A book on renowned artist Alakesh Ghosh titled ‘Life and Works: ALAKESH GHOSH’ published by Cosmos Books was launched in Dhaka on Sunday.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor unveiled the cover of the book at a ceremony at the Sufia Kamal Auditorium of Bangladesh National Museum in the evening as the chief guest.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister said a book on the life and works of Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin, who is considered the pioneer of Bangladeshi modern art, will be published soon.
"Books on the lives and works of other eminent artists, including Quamrul Hassan, will also come out gradually," he said. Bangladesh National Museum and Gallery Cosmos jointly arranged the book launching ceremony.
Death anniv of M A Samad today
Today is the 12th death anniversary of M A Samad, an Insurance legend & founder of Bangladesh General Insurance Company Ltd. (BGIC), says a press release.
After his retirement as Managing Director of Jiban Bima Corporation, he established BGIC, the first Insurance Company in private sector after country’s liberation. Moreover he was the founder Director of Bangladesh Insurance Academy and former Chairman of Bangladesh Insurance Association. MA Samad was born at Kulaura of Moulvibazar in a respectable Muslim family on 1st January, 1923.
