Rohingya issue a ‘blessing’ for Hasina, claims AL leader

The organising secretary of the ruling Awami League (AL), Ahmed Hossain, yesterday said the Rohingyas who have entered the country following persecution by the Myanmarese junta have become a “blessing for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina”. “Many people are saying that the Rohingyas have emerged as a curse for Sheikh Hasina, but we think it’s not a curse, it’s a blessing for our leader,” he argued while speaking at a discussion in the city.

Hundreds of thousands of Rohingya people have fled violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state since a military crackdown began on August 25. International agencies say an estimated 536,000 people crossed the border into the south-eastern Bangladesh district of Cox's Bazar over seven weeks.

The central AL leader justified his statement by saying that PM Sheikh Hasina has been praised by the international community for sheltering the Rohingyas and has been awarded the title ‘Mother of Humanity’.

“So I will say that the Rohingya people have come as a blessing for Hasina,” he added. Earlier, on Saturday, finance minister AMA Muhith told the media that tackling the Rohingya crisis is the real challenge Bangladesh is currently facing as it could destroy the economy.

Hossain also criticised BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for her past deeds, describing her as a “mother of barbarity”. There was “no other option but to arrest her” to establish the rule of law in the country, he added.
