UNHCR collecting data on 536,000 Rohingyas

UNB

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been working with the Bangladesh government to collect data on the estimated 5,36,000 forcibly displaced Rohingyas of Rakhine state of Myanmar and their needs, reports UNB. "The family counting exercise will enable the Government, UNHCR and other agencies to have a better understanding of the size and breakdown of the population and where they are located," UNHCR spokesperson Andrej Mahecic has told reporters at a regular press conference in Geneva, Switzerland. "It is key for getting the right aid to the right people. It will also help flag refugees with special protection needs, such as single mothers with small infants, people with disabilities, or children and elderly refugees who are on their own," he added.

The exercise has so far counted 17,855 families - more than 70,000 individuals.

Around 5,36,000 Rohingyas have entered Bangladesh from Rakhine state of Myanmar to avoid persecution carried out by he Myanamr army since August 25.

Another report adds: Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan yesterday said during his ensuing visit to Myanmar he will repeatedly urge the authorities there to take back the Rohingyas who were forced to flee into Bangladesh, reports

UNB from Gazipur.

“We will discuss with the Myanmar government so that the Rohingya people can lead their life safely after their return to their homeland,” said the Minister while talking to reporters after attending a programme at Shafipur Ansar VDP academy.

Referring to the claim of the Myanmar army chief that Rohingyas are not Myanmar nationals, the Home Minister said that if anyone denies history it will be denial of truth. “ Historically Rohingyas are Myanmar nationals.”

Earlier the Myanmar army chief said that Rohingyas are not native. The Rohingya were brought into the country by British colonialists.

The Home Minister attended a concluding programme of ‘Basic Training and Masters in Human Security Course’ of 34th BSC cadre (Ansar) officials.

Director General (DG) of Bangladesh Ansar and VDP Major General Sheikh Pasha Habib Uddin, was also present at the programme.

The Home Minister will leave Dhaka for Myanmar on October 23 on a 4-day visit to discuss Rohingya issue.
