Retreating monsoon drenches Dhaka in pre-dawn downpour

Special Correspondent

Before biddign adieu this year, the spluttering monsoon yesterday released a downpour in Dhaka yet again just before dawn, leaving residents caught in waterlogged streets later in the morning. The downpour had many parts of Demra, Agargaon, and Mirpur under water.

According to the Met Office, the two-hour rainfall amounted to 61mm until 6am in Agargaon. Even though monsoon was less active over the country, the showers in the capital was triggered by a local cell. No such heavy rainfall was reported from any other part of the country.

Monsoon had started winding up yesterday from the north-western part of the country before its final retreat, which is expected on Tuesday, Abdur Rahman, said  the duty meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office.

Netrokona in the north-east recorded 37mm of rain. It was followed by 14mm in Tarash (Sirajganj), 11mm in Mymensingh, 9mm in Sylhet and 3mm in Bogra.

Last night’s showers in the city were in keeping with this year’s rainfall pattern, which recorded more than average rainfall since the arrival of monsoon on June 17.

The rainfall this year was 20–25 per cent more than its normal average until September, Abdur Rahman told The Independent.

A resident of Hatirpool area of the city said the lashing rain, which resembled the showers during the height of monsoon, caused waterlogging in some of the streets. He said he had difficulty taking his son to school, but was lucky to find a rickshaw.

Residents from other parts of the city reported that the heavy rain, accompanied by winds, had cut off electricity as transformers went out of order in the heavy wind and rain. Fortunately, the waterlogging did not last long. But much of the day passed with the sky remaining overcast. There was a envelope of haze in some of the city’s open spaces, signalling the approach of Hemanta, the season of dew.
