AL to place 11 proposals during talks with EC today

Staff Reporter

The ruling Awami League would place 11 proposals for holding free and fair general polls during its dialogue with the Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday, party general secretary Obaidul Quader said yesterday. “We have already finalised 11 specific proposals to be placed to the EC during our dialogue,” Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, told reporters. He was speaking at the reception of the new secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division, Md. Nazrul Islam, and farewell to the outgoing secretary, MAN Siddique, at his Secretariat office.

The EC has been holding talks with 40 registered political parties since August 24 to take their opinion on its preparation for the next general election. The EC has invited parties from the bottom of the list in line with the sequence of registration. It has held talks with 35 political parties so far. The minister appreciated the BNP’s participation in a dialogue with the EC. “It is positive for politics, and I hope that the BNP will also take part in the next parliamentary election,” he said.

The AL leader said his party did not want to attain victory by defeating weak contestants and rather looked forward to contesting against strong opponent in the next general election slated for 2019.

Quader noted that the BNP had made a mistake by boycotting the previous general election. “And I don’t believe they (BNP) will repeat the same mistake. We want the BNP’s participation in the next polls,” he said, adding that BNP was a strong rival as it was a big political party.

During the meeting, Quader gave different directives for controlling overloaded vehicles and ensuring quality of road repairs. He said the number of vehicles on roads has increased rapidly and so overloading of vehicles should be controlled. Three back-to-back floods had also caused massive damage to roads and highways across the country, he added.

Roads and highways department chief engineer Ebne Alam Hasan, BRTA chairman Md. Mashiar Rahman, DTCA executive director Syed Ahmed, and Road Transport and Highways Division additional secretaries were among those present on the occasion.
