SC goes for admin reshuffle

Staff Reporter

The Supreme Court (SC) has transferred 10 senior officials of the registrar’s office, including registrar general Syed Aminul Islam, as part of a massive administrative change. The changes in the apex court’s top administration came amid the ongoing debate over Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha’s one-month leave. Sources said the SC authorities effected the changes after approving a law ministry proposal in this regard. According to the law ministry’s proposal, the registrar general was posted as the new chairman of the

Minimum Wage Board. High Court registrar Dizar Hossain was transferred as the special judge of Dhaka district and the additional registrar of the High Court Division, Md. Sabbir Faiz, was posted as additional district judge of Lalmonirhat. The CJ’s personal secretary, Mohammad Anisur Rahman, was transferred to Panchagarh district, additional registrar Zabid Hossain to Rangpur, additional registrar Aurunab Chakraboti to Satkhira, deputy registrar Farzana Yasmin to Pirozpur, deputy registrar Kamal Hossain Shikdar to Chuadangha, and deputy registrar Azizul Haque to Thakhurgaon, according to law ministry sources.

The law ministry issued a separate government order (GO) after receiving the copy of the SC’s approval to its proposal yesterday afternoon. Apart from the 10 SC officials, the law ministry has also transferred some other officials.

In its GO order, which will be effective till further order, the law ministry said that the transfers were made after consultations with the SC.

On October 11, law minister Anisul Huq had told the reporters that the acting chief justice, Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, wanted to bring some changes in the SC administration.

On October 13, Chief Justice Sinha, who is now abroad, had said that he was a “bit worried about the independence of the judiciary”.

CJ Sinha’s application for sick leave came up in the wake of severe criticism by Awami League leaders, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, against the Appellate Division’s verdict scrapping the 16th Amendment to the Constitution that empowered Parliament to remove SC judges for misbehaviour or incapacity.

While leaving for the airport on Friday night, CJ Sinha had handed a statement to reporters in front of his official residence, claiming that he was in sound health. He said he was a bit worried over the independence of the judiciary and really embarrassed over the criticism levelled against him by the PM, some ministers, and a section of politicians and lawyers.
