Stress on accurate statistics for dev plans

RANGPUR: Speakers at a seminar stressed on conducting accurate, authentic, reliable and latest statistics for taking proper development plans to attain sustainable development goals (SDGs), reports BSS.

They came up with the views at the seminar on ‘Small Area Atlas Dissemination’ held at conference room of the Divisional Commissioner here on Saturday.

The Statistics and Informatics Division of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) under the ‘Strengthening Statistical Capacity of BBS for Collecting Data on Population and Development Project’ organised the event with assistance of UNFPA.

Statistics and Informatics Division Secretary KM Mozammel Haque attended the seminar as the chief guest with Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed in the chair.

Deputy Director General of BBS ABM Arshad Hossain, Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Minu Shill, Additional Secretary to the Statistics and Informatics Division ABM Zakir Hossaine addressed as special guests.

Director of the Census Wing of BBS Zahidul Hoque Sardar delivered keynote speeches on ‘Small Area Atlas: Rangpur Division.’

Secretary Haque said major censuses and surveys are generally being conducted after every ten years in Bangladesh.

“We are trying to reduce the time span to conduct bigger surveys and censuses to disseminate more updated information to speed up uplifts works,” he said.

He expected the small area atlases would work as effective tools for development plans by local government departments, government and non-governmental organisations.

“We have successfully achieved the millennium development goals by 2015 on the way to build a middle income nation by 2021 ---- Now, we want to eliminate the word ‘poverty’ to turn Bangladesh into a developed country,” he said.

“The present government has achieved unprecedented success in socio-economic sectors and is firmly committed to achieve SDGs by 2030,” Haque said adding that small area atlas would help building a developed Bangladesh.

Kazi Hasan Ahmed hoped that BBS would play a key role in preparing development plans for building a prosperous Bangladesh.
