Bangladesh go down fighting to Japan

Kenta Tanaka’s dying minutes double strike helped Japan post their first win in the Hero Asia Cup Hockey Championship when they defeated Bangladesh 3-1 yesterday at the Maulana Bhashani Stadium.   

It was something shocking defeat for Bangladesh, as despite halting the stronger opponents on 1-1 up to 58 minutes, conceded two goals to minutes before the last siren.

Kenta Tanaka opened the scoring for Japan in the fifth minute of the second quarter and Mamunur Rahman Chayan scored the lone goal for Bangladesh.    

Aiming to do better result against Japan after woeful result against India and Pakistan, Bangladesh demonstrated some good discipline game to halt Japan up to 58 minutes on 1-1, though being under pressure for most of the time.

Japan, who stunned Pakistan halting on 2-2 after 1-5 defeat to India displaying some wonderful stickworks, took 22 minutes to break the deadlock against Bangladesh though they obtained five penalty corners inside 18 minutes, three consecutive on 14th.       

However, Japan took the match in control right from the first siren and keeping the host under tremendous pressure about to take lead in the very second match but an attempt of Kenta Tanaka, who scored one off two goals against Pakistan, missed the side post.

Japan earned four consecutive penalty corners in the first quarter but could not convert any of them and continued to strive to open scoring and succeeded on 22nd.

It was a right side attack and Kenzi Kitazato entered into danger area with a solo effort and scored from a tight angle closely (1-0).

It was seemed that Japan would increase their margin shortly, as Bangladesh was playing with mostly defensive strategy and the host players’ showed some of their intensity with a quick counter attack getting rid of continuous pressure and earned first penalty corner from which they equalised the margin.  

Bangladesh, who were really tormented in their last two matches against Pakistan and India with conceding 14 goals, dig up for their first penalty corner on 28th minute in the third match and converted it successfully when Mamunur Rahman Chayan sounded the board after Pushkar Mimo and Kamruzzaman combination.

Bangladesh’s boys were very unfortunate when the match was heading to a 1-1 draw Kenta Tanaka came to action to strike in span of two minutes.

This time Bangladesh defense also looked very disorganized and Kenta taking the advantage to stun all when marked the targets in a quick succession on 59th and 60th minute (3-1).
