Authorities of Dhaka University (DU) yesterday observed Mourning Day marking Jagannath Hall tragedy, reports BSS.
The day is observed as the mourning day at the university every year in memory of the people killed in a building collapse at Jagannath Hall on October 15, 1985, said a DU release here.
A mourning procession was brought out on the campus from ‘Aparajeyo Bangla’ that ended at October Smriti Stambha (monument) of Jagannath Hall. A good number of students, teachers, employees and relatives of the deceased wearing black badges took part in the procession. Teachers, students and employees of the university led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Akhtaruzzaman placed wreaths at the monument.
Later, a discussion was held at Jagannath hall presided over by DU VC. DU Treasurer Professor Kamal Uddin, Dhaka University Teachers' Association (DUTA) President Professor ASM Maksud Kamal, General Secretary Professor Rahmatullah and Jagannath Hall Provost Professor Asim Sarkar, among others, spoke at the memorial meeting, the release added.
Besides, a voluntary blood donation campaign was held on the dormitory premises in the morning.
