The government has decided to procure six rail-mounted quay gantry cranes for Chittagong Port from China at a cost of Tk 344.92 crore.
A contract-signing function was held in the presence of Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan at the Secretariat yesterday.
Rear Admiral M Khaled Iqbal, Chittagong Port Authority’s chairman, and Chen Kai, executive general manager of Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Ltd, signed a contract on behalf of their respective organisations.
The main objective of procuring the rail-mounted quay gantry cranes is to ensure smooth and faster handling of containers at Chittagong Port, the minister said after the contract was inked.
“We have a target to complete the first phase of the construction works of Potenga Container Terminal by 2019, Laldia Terminal by 2020 and Bay Terminal by 2021,” Khan further said.
Describing Chittagong Port as the gateway of Bangladesh, the shipping minister noted that around 92 per cent of the country’s total exports and imports are handled from this port.
The government is working relentlessly to develop Chittagong Port, including enhancing the process of its capacity building, through modernisation, operations, conservation and management, the shipping minister added.
“We had purchased 71 pieces of equipment at a cost of Tk. 135.42 crore for Chittagong Port in the 2016–17 fiscal year to enhance its capacity to handle container and cargo,” the minister noted. Moreover, initiatives have been taken to procure 252 more pieces of equipment in the 2017–18 fiscal year for the port, Khan added.
Under the agreement, the Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Company Ltd will supply the cranes within one-and-a-half years. The capacity of each of the cranes is 40 tonnes. Each crane would able to handle 25 to 32 twenty equivalent units (TEUs) per hour.
The six rail-mounted quay gantry cranes would be installed at the New Mooring Container Terminal of Chittagong port. Following the installation of the cranes, it would be possible to handle containers from three gearless ships at a time. It would also help boost the productivity of ships and reduce the average rates of their anchorage periods.
The acting shipping secretary, Abdus Samad, and other high-ranking officials were present at the function.
