Electricity from the first commercial project of rooftop solar power generation is expected to be available in the city from the June next as Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) has awarded contract to a private contractor. According to a report of this newspaper on Saturday, the capacity of the DPDC rooftop solar project is 750 kilowatt. Matsaya Bhaban at Ramna and Shikkha Bhaban at Abdul Gani Road, Shilpakala Academy in Segunbaghicha are among the six government buildings which will be brought under the project. The power distribution companies have moved for such rooftop solar projects as part of the government’s plan to generate 10 percent electricity by 2020 in line with United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (MDGs).
The programme is going ahead keeping in mind the government’s pledge to reach electricity to all by the year 2021. Through this programme employment opportunity for many people will be created directly or indirectly. This is no mean achievement. The initiative will provide the people of the country with the unique opportunity of getting environment-friendly solar power. With the increase in the number of population the demand for electricity is also increasing in the country. Measures are also being taken by the government and private organisations to meet the demand.
Small businessmen, people connected with cottage industry and other professions, and students are enjoying the benefits of solar energy in the country. The programme is playing an important role including reducing the health risk of rural families, checking environmental pollution, saving bio-gas and contributing to afforestation. Besides, through reduction in the use of kerosene oil substantial amount of foreign exchange is being saved.
The programme has contributed to rejuvenation of the rural economy. In the past, most of the people in rural areas would get lost in deep slumber just after evening. Now a different scenario is prevailing at villages. Now the villages are pulsating with activities till late into the night. At present electricity is mainly produced by using gas and coal. The said project will lessen the pressure on gas. About 1000 MW electricity is expected to be produced from the rooftops of buildings in Dhaka city. Many believe that the project will be commercially viable as commercial rate of electricity tariff is almost same. It is expected that the government will take pragmatic measures for expansion of the project to reach its benefit to the people.
