‘Economic wing’ to be set up in Delhi to boost business ties

DEEPAK ACHARJEE

Forty-five years after establishing the Bangladesh high commission in New Delhi, the government is going to set up an "economic wing" at the mission office to increase economic cooperation, investment and technical assistance between the two countries.

The Economic Relations Division (ERD) has prepared a proposal in this regard and it would be placed at the meeting of the Secretary Committee on Administrative Improvement Affairs to be held soon.

After getting approval of the secretary committee, the ERD will start the process to appoint a deputy secretary-level official for the post of economic counselor.

Senior secretary of the ERD, Kazi Shafiqul Azam, in his proposal, said an administrative officer and driver-cum-messenger would be appointed locally for smooth functioning of the proposed wing.

“The economic counselor will project Bangladesh’s position to draw more investment in Bangladesh to boost economic relations between the friendly countries,” the proposal said.

“We have opened an economic wing at the Bangladesh embassy in China recently, considering the business importance. We will open the new wing for the same purpose,” it added.

The ERD secretary expressed hope that economic relations between the two countries would be strengthened after the new wing is opened at the Bangladesh high commission in Delhi.

The proposal said that the Indian government has provided a huge amount of funds as loan under line of credit, grant and technical assistance to Bangladesh from 1972 till date.

The friendly country is also playing a vital role in developing various sectors such as the railways, road communications, electricity, education, science, information technology, tourism, agriculture, environment, health, sports and local government, it added.

At present, Bangladesh has diplomatic missions in five major Indian cities: New Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Agartala and Mumbai.
