A five-day-long annual Asia Pacific Resilience (PR) Disaster Response Exercise and Exchange (DREE), a civil-military disaster preparedness and response initiative programme, ended in the capital and Mymensingh yesterday.
Some 1,600 participants from 130 different government and non-government organisations, including the media persons, took part at the US-Bangladesh exercise. A good number of participants from Canada, China, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Nepal, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, the US and the UK also took part in the event.
Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Operation and Training) of Bangladesh Air Force Air Vice Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat addressed the concluding function as the chief guest.
The Armed Forces Division, the US Army Pacific Command and the ministry of disaster management and relief jointly organised the exercise.
Aim of the Disaster Response Exercise and Exchange (DREE)-2017 was to enhance disaster preparedness, response capabilities and civilian-military coordination in the face of a possible large-scale natural disaster.
The secretary of the ministry of disaster management and relief, Md Shah Kamal, had inaugurated the function on October 8 at the Golf Garden restaurant in the capital yesterday.
The exercise was held on simultaneously in Dhaka and Mymensingh to test and enhance the country’s own ability to manage earthquakes, share international knowledge and practices of tools and services for the integration of the international system into the national system and train divisional and field-level planners/disaster coordinators.
