“Many foreigners want to know how Chinese leaders govern such a great power. This book, written by a Chinese president and published in many different languages, tries to answer that question. It is really exciting,” said Ingo Nentwig, a famous German Sinologist. He has lived in many parts of China and has carried out an in-depth study of Chinese issues. “Xi Jinping: The Governance of China comes at a good time,” he added.
Xi Jinping: The Governance of China was jointly edited by the State Council Information Office, the CPC Central Committee Literature Research Office and China International Publishing Group. The county’s Foreign Languages Press released the book in nine languages (ten versions), including versions in Chinese, English, French, Russian, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Japanese. The book was originally made available around the world on September 28, 2014. It soon aroused a global response, and now serves as an important window through which the international community can understand contemporary China. The book is also a golden key when attempting to interpret the development of modern China.
Over the past three years, Xi Jinping: The Governance of China has been published in 21 languages across 24 versions. A total of 6.42 million copies of the book have been sold in some 160 countries and regions, including more than 500,000 copies sold outside of China. The volume has become the most read and influential book by a Chinese leader since reform and opening up first began in 1978.
On October 8, 2014, Xi Jinping: The Governance of China was officially released in multiple languages during the Frankfurt Book Fair. Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said at the release ceremony that Xi Jinping: The Governance of China explains the position of President Xi Jinping and other Chinese leaders and can help us all better understand Chinese politics, while also explaining that the dream of a great rejuvenation for the Chinese nation, and an open, stable and prosperous China are in line with European interests.
In May 2015, a seminar on the English version of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China was held as part of China’s guest-of-honour activities during BookExpo America. “The book is an eloquent, thoughtful window on a leader, a country, and a millennia-old civilization,” was the congratulatory message from the former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
Recently, China’s Foreign Language Press collaborated with Uzbekistan Press in translating and publishing an Uzbek-language version of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China. President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, wrote a preface to the book. Xi Jinping: The Governance of China is of great significance for understanding Chinese policies and the profound connotations, basic principles and guidelines surrounding contemporary China’s comprehensive reform efforts,” Shavkat Mirziyoyev said.
