Detectives arrested Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Maqbul Ahmad, its Secretary General Dr Shafiqur Rahman and seven other party leaders from the city's Uttara area yesterday night, reports UNB. A team of Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested them from a house at Road-3 of Sector-11 of the posh area around 8:15pm, said DB Deputy Commissioner (North) Sheikh Nazmul Alam.
He said the Jamaat leaders were holding a secret meeting at the house when the arrest was made. The other arrested Jamaat leaders include its Nayeb-e-Ameer Mia Golam Parwar. Jamaat is no longer a registered political party of the country as it failed to meet Election Commission requirements. The Election Commission (EC) June 01, 2015 informed the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) that the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami has been cancelled.
Earlier on August 1 of 2013, the High Court announced Jamaat’s registration as a political party as illegal.
