Three notable plays by three prominent local theatre troupes will be staged today evening at three separate venues of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), Segun Bagicha in the capital. The plays will be brought to the stage as a part of the ongoing sixth edition of the ten-day theatre festival titled ‘Ganga-Jamuna Theatre and Cultural Festival’.
Theatre troupe of BSA will stage their new play titled ‘Hamlet’ at the National Theatre Hall, while Dhaka Padatik will bring their 33rd production ‘Paicho Chorer Kiccha’ on stage at the Experimental Theatre Hall and Mad Theatre will stage their maiden play ‘Naddiyo Natim’ at the Studio Theatre Hall.
The play ‘Hamlet’, originally written by William Shakespeare, has been translated and adapted by late writer Syed Shamsul Haq and directed by eminent director Ataur Rahman.
‘Hamlet’ is a play that undertakes a profound exploration of moral dilemmas; it is also audacious and comic-tragedy with the themes of murder, distrust, clandestine affairs, palace-conspiracy and revenge. Set in the Kingdom of Denmark, the play dramatises the revenge Prince Hamlet is instructed to enact on his uncle Claudius. Claudius had murdered his own brother, Hamlet’s father, King Hamlet, and subsequently seized the throne, marrying his deceased brother’s widow, Hamlet’s mother Gertrude.
On the other hand, Based on a traditional folklore of Khulna, the script of the play ‘Paicho Chorer Kiccha’ is collected, written and directed by Kazi Chapal. The production which can be referred to a musical production opens with the setting of the story by a narrator. She, through her musical journey, narrates the life, fate and deeds of Paicho, the protagonist of the play.
Directed by Asadul Islam, the play ‘Naddiyo Natim’ has been made based on the novel of Humayun Ahmed’s ‘Ke Kotha Koy’. Naddiyo Natim is a main character of this novel. Matin Uddin is an Uzbek poet. He reversed the spelling of his name – Naddiyo Natim. He got acquainted with Komal during his tuition. Meghdut plays the role of Komal. Muna is Komal’s mother, played by Subarna. l
