Farmers urged to produce safe foods

GAIBANDHA: Agri-experts in a function here yesterday urged the farmers to produce safe foods anyhow adapting to changed climate in disaster prone areas of the district, reports BSS.

“As our country has been experiencing an abnormal climate change in recent years due to geographical setting creating a grave concern to agriculture, food, soil and environment, there is no alternative to proper strategies to farm crops with climate change”, they said.

They made the comments while addressing a day long training workshop on safe food production through adapting climate change at the auditorium of Shantiram union parishad (UP) of Sundarganj upazila on Sunday.

Upazila agriculture office arranged the function under annual development programme of the upazila parishad aimed at educating the farmers to cultivate crops and get safe foods in all seasons facing the negative and adverse impacts of climate change.

Upazila agriculture officer (UAO) M Rashedul Islam, agriculture extension officer M Rashedul Kabir, and sub assistant agriculture officers Nurul Huda, Taibur Rahman and Himangsu Kumar conducted the training sessions as the resource persons while UP chairman Samiul Islam presided over the ceremony.

Because of a huge change in climatic patterns, seasonal rainfalls, floods, dry seasons, periods for sowing or planting the seeds and seedlings and harvesting are being changed affecting agro production seriously, they                         said.

As the agro production is being hampered seriously and change in seasons is being noticed due to climate change, they suggested the farmers to take different steps for adaptation to the climate change.

In this context, the experts underlined the need for proper cropping pattern with effective farming strategies and technologies to cope with the changed climatic condition with a view to keeping crop production increasing anyhow to ensure food security.

UAO Rashedul Islam also urged the farmers to apply the knowledge acquired from the training in field level and to share it to other fellows to boost production of safe foods to attain the cherished goal of increased agro-productions.

The participants were imparted training on climate, causes of climate, adaptation process, cultivation techniques of different crops and production of safe foods elaborately during the training period.

A total of 90 farmers of Shantiram, Kanchibari and Chhaparhati unions of the upazila participated in the training workshop.
