on axing Mushfiq as captain’

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Papon dismissed the growing speculation on the captaincy of Mushfiqur Rahim by stating that the board is yet to take decision on the issue.

The speculation gained the momentum when Mushfiqur Rahim broke the usual practice of sending other players to the end-of-day press conference on day one by attending it himself and not only just defend his decision to bowl first but also said that he had failed to motivate his players. The revelation that the “coaches” asked him to field in the deep instead of fielding positions close to the bowlers also didn't go down well. He also went further by saying that it was mistake from his part to win the toss.  Mushfiqur’s public outburst gave an indication that he would either step down or the BCB would sack him as his decision of opting to bowl first in both of the Test matches irked the board.

After the second Test ended inside three days with Bangladesh losing it by an innings and 254 runs, their fourth highest margin defeat, Mushfiqur was expected to step down. However neither the captain himself nor the BCB finally walked on that way.

“There is no decision on his captaincy as of now,” said Nazmul Hassan Papon in a programme in the city yesterday. But the president lashed out at the Test captain by disclosing, “he has tarnished the image of the country with outburst publicly.”

“Mushfiqur is different to others. He doesn’t express him much and introvert. So it’s tough to understand what is going on in his mind. But ‘it’s mistake to win the toss’—no captain in the world will make such comment,” Papon said.

“So far I understood he has some discomfort. The team management, the coach or may be we could be the reason of his discomfort. I don’t think it’s a big issue. Once they would arrive in the country, we’ll discuss about it. But the comment he made tarnished the image of the country.”

The BCB boss further said that the information they got from the South Africa wasn’t similar to what Mushfiqur Rahim said in the press conference.

“We have got some information from South Africa. Mushfiqur also said something in the press conference and publicly. But there is no similarity. So after they arrive in the country we’ll discuss further.”

Mushfiqur was appointed Bangladesh's all-format captain in 2011, attempted to resign from the limited-overs roles in May 2013 but was convinced to stay on and was then replaced as ODI captain in September 2014 by Mashrafe Mortaza.

Statistics suggested he has been the most successful captain for Bangladesh in longer version format. Even though his captaincy style always sparks criticism, Bangladesh was on the rise in the Test format until they were brought down by South Africa in two-match Test series in which Bangladesh tasted 333-run and an innings and 254 runs defeat.

Based on their recent performance, Bangladesh expected to put up a fight this time around but the manner in which they surrendered sparked a huge criticism in on and off the country.
