Rehabilitation of flood-hit farmers

Advance preparation can mitigate the sufferings of the flood victims
Rehabilitation of
flood-hit farmers

That around 54,696 flood-hit farmers of Rajshahi, Natore, Naogaon and Chapainawabgonj districts have started getting rehabilitation incentives so that they can recoup their losses is an encouraging  piece of news. According to a report of this newspaper on Sunday, each of 9,000 enlisted farmers will get 20 kilograms of seeds, 20 kilograms of DAP and 10 kilograms of MOP fertilizers for wheat farming on at least one bigha of land while each of 9,600 other farmers to get two kilograms of seeds and 20 and 10 kilograms of DAP and MOP respectively for maize farming on one bigha of land.  Standing crops on around 94,109 hectares of land were inundated by the recent flood in the four districts.

Agricultural production is the driving force behind the agro-based rural economy of the country. If farmers face problems the farm sector will be affected greatly. So it is imperative to look into the interests of the farmers.  If farmers can betake themselves to agricultural production wholeheartedly it will contribute to production of cereal and other crop production. It is quite disturbing to note that the flood-affected people of the northeastern districts are suffering immensely. The prolonged nature of the deluge mainly caused the sufferings.

Flood is an annual reality in the country. We have to survive with this reality. What is needed is laying stress on adequate post-flood rehabilitation.  The farmers should get the support for the forthcoming seasons of  Rabi and Kharip-1 seasons backed by allocation of fund. The relevant department will execute the programme. Considering the magnitude of the flood there is no scope to take it lightly.  It is heartening to note that the district and other local administration are working to address the sufferings of the flood victims.

With the supports, the farmers are expected to cultivate crops like wheat, maize, summer mug bean and mustard on their lands. Seeds and fertilizers should also be provided to farmers free of cost so that they can recover the losses caused by the flood. DAE can take up various steps to recover the losses of crops damaged due to the flood and river erosion in the region.

Advance preparation can mitigate the sufferings of the flood victims.  Scores of people are sitting idle without any job. The relevant authorities should think how these people can be involved in income generating works. Permanent solution of the flood menace should also be found out. Dredging of the silted rivers can help solve flood problem greatly.
