Catching of fish in Kaptai Lake will start here from midnight on August 21 as the three-month ban on catching ends on the day, reports BSS.
At the midnight on May 18, local district administration had imposed a ban on catching, selling and transportation of fish from Kaptai Lake to ensure safe spawning and protect the mother fish during its peak breeding period.
The Kaptai Lake, which is the largest man-made freshwater resource in the South-East Asia a as well as in Bangladesh, continues to serve as a good and important source for fish production.
Commercial exploitation of fish from Kaptai Lake started in 1965. Since then considerable amount of fish are producing every year from this lake which is an important part of the total inland water catch.
The ban on fishing in Kaptai Lake has withdrawn at an emergency meeting of the local district administration here today with additional deputy commissioner M Mostafa Zaman in the chair.
Fish Development Corporation's Kaptai center Manger Commander Mainul Islam, scientific officer of Fish Research Centre Kazi Belal Uddin, Rangamati Chamber's Vice President Belayet Hossain and Fish Traders' Association President M Haroon were, among others, gave their opinion in the meeting.
The meeting was informed that illegal fishing had stopped during the ban due to active cooperation of coast Guards, Army, Police Ansar and mobile courts of local administration in different important points in the lake.
It helped the Fisheries Department during the drives and creating social awareness against catching of fish during the spawning period.
