Some posts on Facebook regarding the Chittagong City College Chhatra Sangsad and its election may have led to the killing of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Sudipta Biswas. Sudipta, 30, assistant secretary of the BCL's Chittagong city unit, was beaten to death in front of his house on Friday morning.
He was a former Master’s student of the mathematics department of the Government City College in Chittagong. Jahangir Alam, Assistant Commissioner (Kotwali circle) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, told The Independent: “We are investigating the case, considering aspects like his Facebook posts and feud over City College BCL committee and Chhatra Sangsad.”
Raising voice over the election of the City College Chhatra Sangsad, he wrote on his Facebook page on September 17, ridiculing leaders of the Chhatra Sangsad: “Congratulations Chhatra Sangsad! Today is September 17, on 12 Anniversary! What more need in life!”
On September 9, he wrote: “Dear leaders, City College Chhatra Sangsad Committee is very much needed. I have no interest but ...”
The committee of the City College was last constituted in 2012. Since then, no new committee has been formed due to infighting. Recently, efforts are being made to form the committee.
A local MP and ward councillor are trying to bring their followers in the new committee. Followers of the MP are not active in politics. Protesting the move, Sudipta started criticising the MP through Facebook posts. “Laughing at me when infiltrators or hybrids behave as if they are the Mummy and Papa of Chhatra League.”
