Highlighting the importance of skilled workforce for economic development, expatriates' welfare and overseas employment minister Nurul Islam BSc said if Bangladesh can send skilled workers abroad with proper training it can multiply its current remittances 10 times, reports BSS.
Speaking at a seminar in the capital yesterday, the minister said about 10.1 million Bangladeshi expatriates are working abroad and they send about $15 billion to Bangladesh annually.
He also said 7.89 lakh people have been sent abroad so far this year and the government has a target to send one million people abroad this year.
Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) organised the seminar on "Local Managerial Capacity Building" at DCCI.
DCCI President Abul Kasem Khan chaired the seminar. CEO and Additional Secretary of National Skill Development Council (NSDC) ABM Khorshed Alam presented the keynote paper.
In the address of welcome DCCI President Abul Kasem Khan said managerial, technical and professional skills have always been the most important factors for any developing countries for fostering innovation, creating business opportunities, increasing productivity, integrating with global value chain and tapping the future prosperity and creating jobs.
He said as per occupation distribution, Bangladesh has only 1.8 per cent managers, 3.8 per cent professionals and 1.9 per cent technical experts. Lack of skill is slowing down the trend of inward foreign remittances and increasing the outward remittances transfer, he added.
"The education system of our country needs to be restructured matching skills supply with the needs of industry and service sector and if any industry spends money for training of their professionals for developing managerial skill that money should be considered as tax free," said DCCI president.
Additional Secretary of Technical and Madrasa Education Division Ashoke Kumar Biswas and Managing Director of SME Foundation Md. Shafiqul Islam spoke on the occasion as designated discussants.
