Illegal and unregistered motorcycles are no longer seen on the roads in Jhenidah, thanks to a strong drive against
unregistered motorbikes by the authorities.
According to Jhenidah district traffic office, traffic police members have seized over one thousand unregistered motorbikes in the district during the last three months. A total of 3,282 motorbikes have been also registered during this period from six upazilas of Jhenidah, earning the government over Tk 6.5 crore, said Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) official in Jhenidah Sheikh Selim Box. And there were only 23,000 registered motorcycles in Jhenidah earlier, he added.
Before the drive began, it was estimated that around 50,000 unregistered motorcycles were being driven on roads in the six upazilas of the district, he said.
At present, the BRTA charges Tk 14,468 for a 80cc motorcycle, Tk 20,218 for 100cc and Tk 21,828 for 150cc as registration cost. Few months ago.
Jhenidah Traffic Police Sergeant Moshiur Rahman said, about six to seven out of every 10 motorcycles were earlier running on the roads without registration. But now, the story has changed in Jhenidah and owners do not come out with unregistered motorbikes due to the police drive. Jhenidah Traffic Police Inspector (TI) Md Salauddin Ahmed said, “Everyone must abide by the law. About 50 to 80 unregistered motorbikes are being seized everyday by police and traffic sergeants in six upazilas.”
The drive against unregistered motorcycles will continue and action will be taken against all unregistered motorbikes, he said.
Talking to The Independent, Jhenidah Assistant Superintendent of Police Gopinath Kanzilal said unregistered motorcycles were posing a serious threat to the law enforcement agencies as criminals prefer using such unregistered vehicles to carry out criminal activities. These vehicles are very difficult to track, he added. The law and order situation has now improved,
he said.
