The sixth edition of the ten-day theatre festival titled ‘Ganga-Jamuna Theatre and Cultural Festival’ (Ganga-Jamuna Natya O Sangskritik Ustab 2017) will begin today on the premises of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the capital’s Segun Bagicha area. This year, the festival has been dedicated to recently-demised Indian thespian Amalesh Chakrabarty, who along with his theatre troupe Anik, had organised the ‘Ganga-Jamuna Theatre Festival’ in India for years.
Prominent theatre personality Aly Zaker will inaugurate the festival today, while Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will be present as chief guest at National Theatre Hall of BSA.
Indian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla will be present as guest of honour while International Theatre Institute honourary president Ramendu Majumder, thespian Mamunur Rashid and Liaquat Ali Lucky will attend as the special guests. Convener of festival organising committee Golam Kuddus will preside over the inaugural ceremony.
Aiming at consolidating the harmony between Bangladesh and India through cultural exchange, Bangladesh Committee of Ganga-Jamuna Natyautsab Parshad has organised the ten-day festival in association with Cultural Ministry of Bangladesh, India-Bangladesh Foundation and BSA.
The festival will feature as many as 26 stage plays from Bangladesh and three from India. Everyday three plays will be staged at 7pm at National Theatre Hall, Experimental Theatre Hall and Studio Theatre Hall simultaneously.
Besides, street plays, music performance, recitation and dance performance by 62 troupes will be held at the festival on the open stage at the festival venue everyday from 4pm to 6:30pm. The festival has been scheduled to conclude on October 15.
Today, on the opening day, three prominent local plays will be staged. Theatre troupe Prachyanat will stage ‘Circus Circus’, a play written and directed by Azad Abul Kalam, at the National Theatre Hall, while Prangane Mor will bring their 10th production titled ‘Condemned Cell’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall and Loko Natyadal (Banani) will stage Rabindranath Tagore’s ‘Baikunther Khata’ at the Studio Theatre Hall of BSA. l
