Anisul calls on acting CJ

Staff Reporter

Law minister Anisul Huq yesterday assured the acting Chief Justice, Abdul Wahhab Miah, of all kinds of cooperation for maintaining good relations between the judiciary and the executive. “It was a courtesy call. The law ministry acts as a bridge between the judiciary and the executive. During the meeting, I assured him of all cooperation from my side,” Huq told reporters after an hour-long meeting with the acting CJ in his Supreme Court chamber.

The other judges of the Appellate Division also met the law minister during the meeting that started around 2 pm. The minister said: “Two other chief justices were appointed during my tenure. I had also told them that the law ministry was a bridge between the judiciary and the executive. I have provided all kinds of cooperation to them and I will continue to do so with the newly appointed acting CJ.”

The minister said Justice Abdul Wahhab Miah had not taken over the responsibility of conducting judicial functions during his past tenures as the acting Chief Justice. “But this time he is conducting judicial functions,” he added.

The law minister went to meet Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha at the latter’s residence yesterday afternoon. He enquired about the CJ’s health during his visit.

Later, the minister said: “I met the CJ at his residence. He was taking rest during my visit.” CJ Sinha went on a one-month leave on health grounds from October 3. The leave has sparked debates in the legal and political arenas.

The BNP and like-minded quarters have alleged that Sinha was sent on forced leave ahead of his retirement in January because of the ruling party’s outrage over his verdict on the 16th amendment case.
