Mercury shoots up to 36.5ºC

The sky has been cloudy for the past two days, but there was no rain to lower the mercury yesterday. The maximum temperature in the city rose to 36.5 degrees Celsius. Coupled with high humidity, it made life difficult. The highest temperature recorded yesterday was 37.5C at Tangail, said Abdur Rahman Khan, a meteorologist at the Dhaka Met Office.

Both Dhaka and Tangail have been experiencing sultry weather since Wednesday, with 35.6C and 36.5C, respectively. Mymensingh recorded 36C and Sylhet 36C yesterday. But there may be late rain on Thursday and Friday—this may cool the weather, Khan told The Independent. There was 28mm of rainfall at Teknaf till 6am yesterday and a few drops in Mongla. Other than this, no precipitations were recorded by the Met Office.

The forecast for the next 24 hours, beginning at 9am on Thursday, said there is likely to be light to moderate rain/thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds, at a few places in Dhaka, Khulna, Barisal and Chittagong divisions, and at a few places in Mymensingh, Sylhet, Rangpur and Rasjshahi divisions, with moderately heavy falls elsewhere in the country.

Regarding the stifling heat and humidity, the meteorologist said it was basically due to preparations by the monsoon to withdraw from Bangladesh, which is only about a week away. Usually, before its arrival, heat and humidity mark the weather, and the same happens days ahead of its farewell, Khan added.

Besides, a low brewing slowly over the North Bay may have caused the high humidity. Only a few days of rain may wash it away and it may occur after 72 hours, the meteorologist said.
