Young paceman Mohammad Saifuddin has been drafted first time for the one-day squad against the high-ranked South Africa. Bangladesh Cricket Board announced Saifuddin’s name in the 16-member Tigers squad for the three-match one-day international series against the Proteas yesterday. The 20-year-old pace all-rounder, who was fast-tracked into international cricket with T20 in April, was earned a maiden call for the senior team after a striking performance in the ICC Under-19 World Cup at home turf.
The right-handed pacer represented Bangladesh so far twice against Sri Lanka in 2017. All-rounder Nasir Hossain along with wicketkeeper-batsman Liton Kumar Das recalled for the 50-over series after a long break.
Liton, who is currently performing for Bangladesh in Test in South Africa, played his last one day in 2015. Of course, Nasir played against New Zealand in tri-nation series after a long gap of time though he was not in the squad of the ICC Champions Trophy, the last international assignment of the 50-overs.
Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, Sunzamul Islam and Shafiul Islam, who were in the Tigers last one-day squad, have been dropped this time.
Saikat is recovering from eye infection. Sunzamul, who was reported the same complaint but he is now playing in the ongoing National Cricket League (NCL) for Rajshahi Division.
Fast bowler Shafiul Islam could not play one day since October last year though he was drafted in the ICC Champions Trophy in England in June.
Bangladesh ODI squad: Masrafe Bin Mortaza (Captain), Tamim Iqbal Khan, Litton Kumar Das, Soumya Sarker, Imrul Kayes, Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan (Vice Captain), Shabbir Rahaman, Nasir Hossain, Mominul Haque, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Rubel Hossain, Saif Uddin.
On the other hand, Bangladesh opening batsman Tamim Iqbal has suffered an injury and has been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa which starts tomorrow in Bloemfontein.
“Following the first Test match Tamim underwent an ultrasound scan which demonstrated a grade-1 hip muscle strain.
These findings coupled with his worsened clinical signs mean that he will be unavailable for selection for the second Test,” said national team physiotherapist Thihan Chandramohan.
“If his recovery goes to plan then we are hopeful that he will be fit for the first ODI on 15 October,” Chandramohan told media.
