The death toll in the shooting in Badda area of the capital on Thursday night has risen to three after another Awami League leader, who was shot at, died in a private hospital yesterday morning.
The deceased, identified as Mahbubur Rahman Gama, was the Awami League Dhaka City (North) unit’s Assistant Literary Affairs Secretary.
Another person who was shot in the same incident, Abdus Salam, Senior Vice-President of the Badda Union unit of the Juba League, the youth wing of AL, is being treated at the Dhaka Medical
College Hospital. The police and witnesses say that a group of armed men opened fire on the Awami League leaders while they were supervising the setting up of a stage at the Badda Adorsha Nagar ground on Thursday night in preparation to mark the National Mourning Day.
Two Awami League members, Shamsu Molla and Manik, were declared dead when they were taken to the hospital.
Talking to The Independent, Deputy Police Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Media and Public Relation) Muntasirul Islam Rony said, “We are investigating the triple murder case. It seems there was a dispute over extortion, controlling the cattle market and ready-made garments waste business in the area.”
Local sources said that Baul Sumon used to dominate the RMG waste trading business in the area. After his recent death due to cardiac arrest, there was a conflict brewing between different groups for control of the business .
Gama was trying to take control of the RMG waste business, but some of Sumon’s followers were trying to protect their own turf. This led to a deadly conflict, which left three people dead, said some local businessmen on condition of anonymity.
Gama dominated the Badda Adharshanagar area, while his rivals, Jahangir and Uzzal, controlled the Aftabnagar area. Almost everyone knew of the animosity between the two groups.
