JS body for food stock policy

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Food Ministry yesterday suggested the government adopt a food stock policy on an emergency basis to ensure quality of food grains, reports UNB. It also recommended updating the National Food Policy-2006 to make it a time-befitting one. The parliamentary watchdog came up with the recommendations at its 21st meeting held at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban with its chairman Abdul Wadud in the chair.

It asked the Directorate of Food to expedite the implementation of Bangladesh Modern Food Storage Facilities Project financed by the World Bank, which started in January 2014 and is scheduled to be completed by June 2020.

As per the project involving around Tk 1920 crore, eight modern food steel silos with a total capacity of 5.35 lakh tonnes will be constructed in the country.

The silos will be constructed in Barisal, Narayanganj, Dhaka, Ashuganj, Mymensingh, Mahesorpasha, Chittagong and Madhupur. Committee members Food Minister Qamrul Islam, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh and Shirin Nayeem attended the meeting.
