Teen ‘tortured to death by cops’ in Sherpur
Sherpur: A 17-year-old boy died hours after being released from police custody in Nalitabari upazila early Monday, reports UNB.
The victim was identified as Biswajit Chandra Dey, son of Bidhan Chandra Dey of Uttar Bazar area in the upazila.
Talking to UNB correspondent, Biswajit’s sister Seuly said a police team detained his brother along with some hemp from Uttar Bazar area around 9:00 pm and released him around 11:00 pm.
Later, he died around 1:00am after he had taken to Nalitabari Upazila Health Complex as he complained of chest pain.
Demanding punishment of the involved policemen, angry locals brought out a protest procession with the body of the teenage boy at Uttar Bazar intersection in the morning and vandalised the office of ASP (Nalitabari Circle).
Contacted, Jahangir Alam, Assistant Superintendent of Police (Nalitabari Circle), denied the allegation of any kind of torture on the boy in the police custody.
“The boy was detained at night but released hours after his detention. He was not tortured,” he added.
27 Bangladeshis arrested
at Benapole border

Border Guard Bangladesh members detained 27 Bangladeshi nationals, who had been trafficked to India, while they were entering the country through Sadipur border here on Monday.
The detainees, including three children and 11 women, hail from different areas of Faridpur, Narail and Bagerhat districts.
Lt. Col Ariful Haque , commanding officer of 49-BGB (Border Guard Bangladesh) battalion said on secret information a BGB team conducted a drive in the afternoon and detained them. Later, they were handed over to Benapole Port Police Station.
Farmer hacked to death

A farmer was hacked to death by some criminals at village Khaspara in Chuadanga sadar upazila of the district on Sunday.
The deceased was Ripon, 30, son of Mossadek Hossain of village Khaspara in sadar upazila of the district.
According to sources, on the night of the incident Ripon went to the pond to watch if everything is alright. But he did not return home. Afterwards his family members went to the pond and found his body lying there. On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body.
Previous enmity might be the reason behind the murder, police sources said.
A case was filed with Chuadanga police station in this connection.
Lightning strike kills one

A woman and her cow died after being struck by lightning at Goljer Mondaler Dangi village in Faridpur sadar upazila on Monday.
The deceased was identified as Firoza Begum, 50, wife of Abul Kalam of the village.
North Channel Union Praised Chairman Mostaque Ahamed said a thunderbolt hit the victim’s dwelling house during heavy downpour at 11am, leaving Feroja Begum critically injured and a cow dead on the spot.
Feroja was rushed to Faridpur General Hospital where on duty doctor declared her dead.
Doctor arranges free medical camp to serve humanity
Comilla: Dr Pankaj Kumar Saha, a well-known doctor of Chandanail village in Muradnagar upazila of Comilla, has been providing free treatment to thousands of people every year here, reports UNB.
He along with some of his colleagues travels every year to the remote village of Comilla, his birthplace, from Dhaka, his workplace, to provide medical services free of charge to the inhabitants of the village. It includes not only free treatment, but also free medicines for the thousands of patients.
Besides Muradnagar, people from Nabinagar upazila of neighbouring Brahmanbaria district throng Chandanail village to avail of treatment during these visits that Dr Saha and his team very happily provide.
Dr Saha said he initiated it only for serving people and humanity through his work.
Prof PK Saha is the Head of the Department of Laparoscopic and Surgery, Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, Dhaka. He is the son of late Rajmohon Saha and late Makhonbala Saha.
To mark the death anniversaries of his parents, the eminent physician arranges a two-day long free medical camp during the Durga Puja. A team of specialist doctors also join him in the camp.
Aman cultivation surpasses target in Narsingdi
NARSINGDI: The farmers of the district have brought 1.5 percent more land for cultivating Aman than the target fixed by the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), reports BSS.
Cultivators are expecting a bumper production in the district this season as the crop is growing excellent under favourable weather condition.
Deputy Director of DAE Latafat Hossain today said a total of 41,181 hectares of land have been brought under Aman cultivation against the target of 40,511 hectares of land. He said the target fixed by the department has exceeded by 672 hectares as a good number of farmers have engaged their all-out efforts to make the current Aman farming successful.
