First span put in place in Padma Bridge

The much-hyped Padma Bridge is now a visible reality as the first span (superstructure) of the bridge has been placed on pillars yesterday morning, reports UNB.
The 150-metre long span was installed on the pillars No 37 and 38 in two hours starting from 8:00 am.
With the installation of the first span, the Padma Bridge is now a visible reality, removing all the uncertainties, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader who was present
on the occasion of installing the span.The long-cherished Padma Bride has moved one step forward through this span installation, he added.
Munshiganj-2 constituency MP Shagufta Yasmin Emily, Bridges Division secretary Anwarul Islam, Padma Bridge Project Director Shafiqul Islam, engineers concerned, representatives from China Major Bridge were, among others, present.
The construction work is going on in full swing to complete the work by the stipulated time, said Quader.
The second span will be installed on pillars No. 38 and 39 at the end of October, he said, adding that the construction work on pillar No. 39 will end soon.
The construction work on the countrys largest bridge started in December in 2015 and around 47 percent of the Tk 28,793-crore project has completed so far. It is expected that the mega construction will be completed by December next year. The 6.15-km bridge will have a total of 41 spans, each 150 meters long.
According to the engineers concerned, a total of 41 spans will be installed on 42 concrete pillars. Seven more spans have already stationed at Kumarbog in Mawa. Twelve more have already been made in China which will be brought to Mawa soon. Besides, a process is underway to build the rest of 19 spans in China.
