RMG workers block highway for arrears

Hundreds of RMG workers of “Welltex factory” of Adib Group blocked Dhaka-Mymensing highway  for one hour in Mulaid area of Gazipur demanding to pay their due salary on Saturday. They blocked the highway from 8.30 am to 9.30 am and staged demonstration here.

Workers of the washing section of the factory said, there are about 300 workers work in this section. The factory authorities did not pay their salary for the three months after fixed date in several times. Before the Eid-Ul-Azha, authorities have paid partial salary and declared holiday. After the Eid vacation, authorities yet to pay the rest of salary. Workers claimed that the authorities assured them in several times to pay the due salary, but they did not pay.

On Saturday morning, workers of the washing section put barricade on Dhaka-Mymensing highway avoiding their duties from 8.30 am to 9.30 am . As a result, a long traffic jam were created both sides of the busy highway.

On information, Gazipur industrial police, Mawna highway police and police from Sreepur police station rushed to the spot.

They discussed about the issue with the factory authorites. Later, workers left away the highway getting assurance  of payment within short times from the factory.

Hafizur Rahman, a worker of washing section of the factory said, authorities declared Eid holiday after paid only 10 day’s salary. They assured us to pay the rest salary on September 15, but they did not pay on that date and fixed another date on September 23.

They also missed this date. As a result, we put barricade on the highway protesting the authority’s decision. Ripon, Mehedi, Ashraful and others workers also claimed that the factory authority always execute delay to give worker’s salary in every month.

They also claimed that they are not given overtime  after perform  additional works in holydays.

While contacted, the administration manager of the factory Shamim Ahmed denied worker’s allegation. He said, some workers did not get salaries as they were absent in their duties without permission. He said, however, we will pay their salary very soon after discuss with higher authorities.

Sub-inspector of Gazipur Industrial police Monayem Ahmed said, the workers were removed from the highway after get assurance  about their payment from the factory authority.
