Two AL men gunned down in capital
A leader and an activist of the ruling Awami League (AL) were shot dead and two others injured by unknown assailants in the capitals Badda area last night. Of the deceased, one was identified as Shamsu Mollah, vice-president of Ward-6 unit AL, and the other was Manik, an employee of private clinic Al Shami in the city. Manik was also an AL activist, said police. The injured were identified as Mahbubur Rahman Gama and Abdus Salam. The victims were overseeing the preparation for a programme to be held in the area tomorrow marking the National Mourning Day and the death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Injured Gama is Awami Swechchhasebak Leagues Dhaka City (North) unit Assistant Literary Affairs Secretary, while Salam is the senior vice-president of Badda union unit of Juba League, the youth wing of the AL. Local people rushed Shamsu, Manik, and Gama to a private hospital in Gulshan area where Manik succumbed to his injuries. Abdus Salam, who is undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, said, The four of us were seating in front of Madhuban Bakery around 10pm. Suddenly three gunmen started shooting at us. The attackers escaped the spot hurriedly on motorbikes. Sub Inspector Jayanta Kumar Mandal of Badda Police Station took Salam to the hospital. The DMCH sources said his condition is not critical. Till filing of this report around 1am, no one was arrested in connection. However, different law enforcing agencies, including Rapid Action Battalion, have visited the spot. Local sources claimed the incident might have taken place over assuming supremacy ion the area and over jhut (scraps of fabrics) trading.
