The meeting of United Nations Security Council on Myanmar’s genocide of Rohingyas concluded without any concrete resolution much to the dismay and frustration to the persecuted Rohingyas of Myanmar. UNSC failure is down to the fact that China and Russia backed what Myanmar gives as explanation of violence in the restive Rakhine state. The Myanmar authorities are repeatedly denying the charge that ethnic cleansing or genocide is being committed against Rohingya and they are only conducting security operations to contain the terrorist elements of the community.
Here the role of Russia and China should come under close scrutiny because these two countries strongly took stance against the Rwandan genocide in the early 1990s. There is, however, a clear lack of full diplomatic maneuver on the part of Bangladesh government for which it failed to convince China and Russia on the matter. But there is time. It is expected that Bangladesh would now closely work with governments of these two nations as well as India and win their favour on the matter.
But even as the Security Council failed to attain a consensus, the UN Human Rights Council decided to extend an investigation into abuses committed in Myanmar through a fact-finding mission. This fact-finding mission also Myanmar representative to the UN vehemently opposed saying that such as a move would not be helpful and counterproductive in his country’s efforts to achieve national reconciliation. This means that Myanmar wants to hide what is going on in the Rakhaine state. Authorities in Myanmar continue to block visit of journalists and agents of international human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch to the areas where the country’s military conducted their ‘security operations’. Since the government in Myanmar has labeled ‘Rohingyas’ as ‘Bengalis’ and denied their citizenship and already about half a million of them have entered into Bangladesh since August 25 when the last violence erupted, Bangladesh can hardly hope to get rid of this problem within a short time. And the truth is Myanmar is being successful in its endevour to force the Rohingyas to flee from the Rakhine state as it is applying the most effective weapons—arson and rape—to this end.
Against this backdrop, Bangladesh needs to continue to press authorities in Myanmar—winning necessary support from the international community—to take back the displaced population as early as possible giving back their due rights of citizenship. And failure to do this would be bearing the burden of this large population with its attendant problems.
