Road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader yesterday expressed hope that China and Russia will support Bangladesh over the Rohingya issue.
“China and Russia are now becoming sympathetic towards the ongoing Rohingya crisis. I hope the two countries will support the UN Security Council’s proposal in today’s (Thursday) meeting,” he said.
Quader, who is also the Awami League (AL) general secretary, was speaking at a programme organised by Dhaka City South Jubo League to mark the 71st birthday of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The minister said the PM’s five-point proposal to resolve the humanitarian crisis was praised by international forums. “The Prime Minister’s five-point recommendations made during her address to the UN general have been applauded by the world community,” he added.
Describing the PM as a successful statesman and a pioneer of world peace, Quader said, “Hasina has proved herself to be the lighthouse of world humanity by providing shelter to the Rohingyas who fled to Bangladesh from Myanmar due to persecution.”
Awami Jubo League chairman Md Omar Faruque and its general secretary M Harunur Rashid spoke as special guests at the programme, which was presided over by Dhaka City South Jubo League president Ismail Hossain Chowdhury.
A milad mehfil and voluntary blood donation programme were also arranged to mark the PM’s birthday.
