Rohingyas thrive abroad at the cost of Bangladeshis

I fail to understand why people risk their lives by undertaking the perilous sea voyage to Malaysia Nurul Islam Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister
STAFF REPORTER, Ctg

Nurul Islam, expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment minister, has said that more and more Rohingyas holding Bangladeshi passport are taking up jobs abroad.
This is adversely affecting the prospects of Bangladeshis in general. “At least 50,000 Rohingyas are working abroad. We're having to take the responsibility for any misdeed committed by them as they are Bangladeshi passport-holders,” said the newly appointed minister.
The minister made the remark while exchanging views with reporters at a city hotel yesterday (Thursday). Former lawmaker Ishaque Mia, former city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, AL (Dhaka north) president Nurul Alam Chowdhury, AL (Dhaka north) secretary MA Salam, AL (Dhaka south) secretary Mofizur Rahman, Chittagong Development Authority chairman Abdus Salam and others were present.
Dwelling on the subject of human trafficking, the minister said: “A person can go to Malaysia at a cost of Tk. 60,000. I fail to understand why people risk their lives by undertaking the perilous sea voyage to Malaysia, and that too at a much higher cost. We don't want human trafficking anymore. We want to treat people as human beings.” The minister claimed that there has been no illegal sea voyages to Malaysia since he assumed office.
Nurul Islam declared that technical training centres would be set up in every upazila to enhance the skill of the migrant job seekers. “The country has 41 technical training centres. This number will be eventually increased to 71 to enhance the skill of the migrant labour force,” he said.
“The government has taken several measures to improve the skill of the migrant workers. We recently arranged a nine-day Arabic language learning course. However, there should be training for trainers at the technical training centres. I'll pay surprise visits to such centres and inspect classes,” he said.
Referring to the prospect of exporting manpower to Australia and Saudi Arabia, the minister said: “We could also export manpower to Australia as the country needs plumbers, baby-sitters, doctors, nurses and lawn-mowers. The Saudi government has asked Bangladesh to send 20,000 women workers as domestic helps. However, we could only send 3,000. We could export more female workers as the oil-rich country badly needs domestic helps.”
On the allegation that Rohingyas hobnob with influential people, including politicians, elected public representatives and officials, to obtain Bangladeshi passports after paying hefty sums, the minister urged public representatives not to issue any citizenship and birth certificates to the Rohingyas.
“We'll soon introduce smart card and finger print facilities for common people in Chittagong. We're also trying to turn Prabashi Kalyan Bank (PKB) into a scheduled bank. Although Janata Bank has branches in the UAE, migrant workers there can't use the banking facilities due to ignorance,” he added.
He referred to the plight of migrant labourers, saying that most of them perish due to sun stroke, building accidents and road mishaps.
"The family of a migrant worker will receive Tk. 25,000 as soon as the body reaches a Bangladeshi airport. Ministry officials have been asked to clear all the dues of the deceased migrant workers within two months,” he added.
