‘Khancha’ to represent Bangladesh in Oscar race

‘Khancha’, a government-grant winning full-length feature film, has been picked up as Bangladesh’s official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category for the year 2017. Set against the backdrop of the British period, the film has been directed by Akram Khan and produced by Impress Telefilm.

Bangladesh committee for the 90th Academy Awards nominated the Akram Khan’s ‘Khancha’ over ‘Sona Bondhu’. The announcement was made at a press conference held at a hotel in the capital yesterday. Bangladesh Federation of Film Society and Bangladesh Oscars Committee chairman Habibur Rahman Khan, Professor Abdus Selim, film director Mushfikur Rahman Gulzar, Abu Musa Debu, Abdul Latif Bachchu, Khancha director Akram Khan, actor Azad Abul Kalam and managing director of Impress Telefilm Faridur Reza Sagor, among others, addressed the programme.

Two films ‘Shona Bondhu’ directed by Jahangir Alam Sumon and ‘Khancha’ directed by Akram Khan were selected as the Bangladeshi entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards. Initiated by Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies (BFFS), a nine-member Oscar Bangladesh Committee selected ‘Khancha’ for competing in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 90th Academy Award.

Director Akram Khan expressed his feelings by saying, “I am feeling wonderful that my film has been nominated to compete at the 90th academy award with many prominent films. I do not expect that my film will win an Oscar, but my pleasure is that many renowned filmmakers and great people around the world--who will attend the Oscar event, will watch my film.”

Joya Ahsan, Chandni, Azad Abul Kalam, Arman Parvez Murad, Kayes Chowdhury, Mahbuba Rezanur, Sadika Rahman Raisa and Mamunur Rashid, among others, have enacted different roles in the film. Azad Abul Kalam has acted opposite Joya in the film, while veteran actors Mamunur Rashid and Kayes Chowdhury are playing significant characters.

Azad Abul Kalam and Akram have written the screenplay for the film based on a story by Hasan Azizul Haque. Tanvir Khondokar is the cinematographer of the film and Binod Roy has directed the music, while singer Sagorika has lent her vocal to the playback of the film.

Shot at the various locations of Norail, Munshigonj and Natore, the film was released across the country on September 22. l
