The government has decided to term the Rohingya people ‘forcibly displaced nationals from Myanmar’ and not ‘refugees’, who have taken shelter in Bangladeshi fleeing violence in the Rakhine state of Myanmar.
Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque said this yesterday at a programme organised by Human Rights Forum Bangladesh at Cirdap auditorium in the capital.
He also said that the government has strong logic behind this decision. “The issue will be raised at the United Nationals at the next opportune moment,” he added.
For many years Bangladesh has been trying to resolve the Rohingya issue bilaterally, but in vain, the foreign secretary said.
“So, now we are trying to involve as many parties as possible to reach a solution multilaterally, the country’s top diplomat added.
As the crisis broke out in the Rakhine state of Myanmar on August 25, over 500,000 Rohingyas have fled to Bangladesh amid murder, rape and burning of villages by Myanmar security forces and other groups.
International concern is growing over the fate of the Rohingya and the UN security council was schedule to meet yesterday on Myanmar issue.
