BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s visit to London for treatment may be deferred to a date later this month due to ‘pressing need to remain in the country for political and personal reasons’, according to party sources.
Though the BNP chief was supposed to leave Dhaka tonight for her health check up and eye treatment, she changed the schedule yesterday, said a source close to her. She (Khaleda) took the decision on Wednesday night, added the source.
The BNP chief’s decision follows Wednesday night’s meeting with top leaders of the 20-party alliance at her Gulshan political office, where she informed the leaders that she would leave for London soon.
Party sources said Khaleda postponed her visit to London considering the prevailing political situation and party reorganizational affairs that evoked widespread criticisms from grassroots-level leaders.
Besides, changes in Khaleda’s schedule in London are also instrumental to the postponement of the visit, sources added.
A reliable source in London also confirmed that the former premier has postponed her UK trip for the time being.
Khaleda Zia has already obtained a visa from the UK high commission in Dhaka after completion of all required procedure.
This is the second time since Ramzan that Khaleda postponed her foreign trips. Before the Eid-ul-Fitr earlier last month, she postponed her visit to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.
Contacted, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan yesterday denied to comment on the likely date of Khaleda’s UK trip.
“It is a personal matter of the party chairperson. We do not know when she will be flying to London,” he added.
Earlier, BNP spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon had disclosed that Khaleda Zia would visit London for eye treatment, but he didn’t mention the schedule of the trip.
