At least 17 Rohingya people, including 10 children, died as a trawler carrying them capsized in the Bay of Bengal in Ukhia upazila yesterday, reports UNB from Cox’s Bazar.
Ten children, five women and two men are among the deceased, according to the district administration.
Chailau Chakma, assistant superintendent of Police (ASP) of Ukhia-Teknaf circle, said the trawler carrying around 40 Rohingyas, who fled to Bangladesh amid persecution in Myanmar, sank in the Bay around 3:30 pm amid inclement weather.
Their bodies were recovered later in the afternoon.
Besides, 10 people suffered injuries in the incident and were admitted to Sadar Hospital.
Among the rescued, Abdus Salam, 24, who fled Rakhine along with his seven family members, said there were around 80 passengers in the trawler, and he lost his six family members in the incident.
