Minister seeks report by next month

Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid yesterday (Thursday) asked authorities of private universities to submit report about the progress of shifting to permanent campus by September. He said the government would take a  decision on a case-by-case basis after reviewing the reports. The minister was addressing a meeting with the authorities of private universities. It was organised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) at its auditorium in the city. The UGC chairman, Prof Abdul Mannan, was in the chair.
Nahid said the private universities are supposed to relocate to their own campuses by September. However, only 17 universities have shifted to their respective buildings to begin academic activities. “Many universities have been running for over 20 years, but most of them did not relocate yet. Seven universities are operating on the land of Trusts/ Foundations and nine are running partial academic activities in their own buildings,” he said.
“All the private universities must submit their report by September 30 so that a decision can be taken in this regard,” he added. The minister gave the time for submitting the report after hearing the university authorities, who sought extension of time for relocation. The deadline was extended thrice, but most of the private universities failed to shift to its campuses within seven years of establishment.
