Bangladesh Under-19 cricket team got off to a flying start when they trounced the visiting Afghanistan U-19 team by an imposing 145 runs in the tour opener at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium (SICS) in Sylhet yesterday.
By winning the match, the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the five-match youth ODI series against the tourists ahead of their next international assignment ACC Under-19 Asia Cup in Malaysia on November 9-20 and ICC U-19 World Cup in New Zealand in between January-February.
Put in to bat first, Bangladesh compiled a moderate 222 for nine in 50 overs largely thanks to Towhid Hridoy’s half-century. In its pursuits, Afghanistan were bundled out for a paltry 77 in 34.2 overs.
Towhid Hridoy at No. 4 position topscored for Bangladesh with 52 off 85 with four boundaries after opener Saif Hasan (20), Pinak Ghosh (23) and Afif Hossain Dhubo (19) walked back to the pavilion. Therefore, wicketkeeper-batsman Mahidul Islam Ankan made the second highest of 35. Later Kazi Anik struck 27 and Robiul Haque cracked 18 that gave Bangladesh a fighting total of 222 for nine in the stipulated 50 overs.
Mujeeb was the most successful bowler of Afghanistan who grabbed four wickets for 22. Tariq Stanikzai claimed two wickets, while Shams took one wicket for the visitors.
Chasing the target of 223 runs to win, Afghan youth fell into a bowling devastation from spinner Naeem Hasan and pacer Kazi Anik, who made his youth debut along side with Towhid Hridoy, Monirul Islam, Robiul Haque and Hasan Mahmud for Bangladesh.
The duo scalped seven wickets between them. Young pace all-rounder Kazi Anik, who also shone with willow, snapped up four wickets for 27. Anik later was adjudged man of the match for his all-round performance. Spinner Naeem Hasan bagged three for 11, while Robiul Haque and Moniul Islam captured one wicket apiece for the winners.
After losing opener Tariq Stanikzai for 16, the wickets were tumbling at regular intervals. No one can cross the double digit figure except Tariq (16) and Nisarul Haq (10).
The second match will be played at the same stadium at the same time on September 30.
