The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has taken actions against a number of its officials for their involvement in graft in the last few years as part of the commission's move to stop internal corruption with a view to ensuring its transparency and accountability, reports BSS.
“In the latest move, the commission has recently suspended Mahbub Ullah, chief office assistant of its Sylhet divisional head office, as his involvement was found in taking financial benefit from some corrupt suspects with the promise of relieving them of the charges,” ACC Deputy Director (public relations) Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee told BSS yesterday. The ACC is currently conducting inquiry into allegations against some of its officials over graft issues, he said.
ACC commissioners including Chairman Iqbal Mahmood earlier sounded note of warnings of taking stern actions against its employee for involvement in graft, and said that the commission will go for tougher actions against its employees in case of moral turpitude following its “zero tolerance” policy against corruption by its own employees.
Two ACC officials received rigorous punishment in 2016 while four officials got major punishments and two others received minor punishments in 2015 as per the recommendations of the committee formed to stop internal corruption, he informed.
Some 21 departmental cases were lodged against ACC staff in 2015 and 26 cases in 2016 as per the available statistics of the commission. ACC disposed of 46 cases while 12 more cases have been disposed of through other means.
The lone anti-graft body has earlier formed a committee titled Internal Anti-Corruption Committee headed by its chairman in accordance with section 19 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Rules, 2007 to consistently monitor, supervise, enquire and investigate any allegation against its staff.
As per the rules, the commission has been entrusted with the task of making recommendations for taking legal and departmental actions against its officers and staff after conducting thorough enquiry into the allegations.
The major punishment includes dismissal from services, forced retirement, and demotion to lower level of salary scale while the minor punishment is withholding promotion and salary increment for a certain period.
