Electrician killed in blast
An electrician was killed after blasting a grinding machine at his rented residence in Jamgora area of Ashulia in Savar on Wednesday evening.
The deceased was identified as Salam alias Nayan, 25, supervisor of electricians at BUDS Group, a garment factory in Buribazar area of Ashulia, hailing from Singra upazila of Natore.
Following the blast, locals rushed the injured to nearby Women and Child Health Centre where duty doctor declared him dead.
On information, police rushed to the health centre and sent the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Fire at building doused
A fire broke out at an office in the capital’s Gulshan area on Thursday.
Ataur Rahman, duty officer of Fire Service Control room, said the fire broke out at the 4th floor of a six-storey building around 8:25 am.
On information, two fire fighting units rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze around 9:00 am.
However, the origin of fire could not be known immediately.
‘Drug peddler’ held with heroin
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested an alleged drug peddler along with 3.25 kg of heroin from Ujanpara in Rajshahi on Wednesday.
Tipped off, a team of RAB-5 conducted a drive in the area and arrested Rabiul Islam, 25, son of Rafiqul Islam along with the drugs worth Tk 3.25 crore, said RAB.
They also seized two mobile phone sets, four SIM cards and some cash from his possession.
A case was filed.
‘Drug traders’ nabbed in Gazipur
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested two alleged drug traders and seized 21.30 kg hemp from their possession in Joydevpur, Gazipur on Tuesday night.
Acting on a tip-off, a operational team of RAB-1 conducted a raid near the Padma Housing Society Gate at Jiranibazar of Dakhin Panishail in Joydevpur at around 9:30 pm and arrested two ‘drug dealers’-Shamim Mridha, 30, and Kamal, 30.
The elite force also seized 21.30 kg of hemp from their possessions. During preliminary interrogation, the arrestees revealed that they had been involved in illegal drug trading for a long time.
Belt factory fire burns 3
Three workers suffered burn injuries as a fire broke out at a belt factory in Mogoltuli of the capital on Wednesday.
The injured are Ekramul, 13, Sanjoy, 14, and Ranjit, 27, workers of ‘Aziz Belt Factory’ situated on the 6th floor of a seven-storey building.
The fire erupted around 1:30pm from a cigarette while the workers were mixing solution to make belts, said duty officer at the Fire Service central control room Mahfuz Riven. The injured were taken to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, he said.
Strike at sweetmeat shops
A group of restaurant and sweetmeat owners went on indefinite strike in Barisal city from Thursday morning protesting the fine by mobile court
About 200 owners, staff and employees of the city took part in the strike closing their shops from the morning.
Biswageet Ghosh Bishu, president of Barisal Hotel Owners Association, said that a mobile court team has been starting operation in different restaurants from last three days and fined abnormally after finding fault. Amount of the fine totally unbearable for us as maximum of the shop and hotel owners are poor.
He said the association already informed the facts to the DC Barisal but yet to get any result. “So protesting the matter we started the indefinite strike from this morning”, he added.
On the other hand RAB-8 in an official statement claimed that a mobile court conducted by Major Sohel Rana and executive magistrate Md. Gausul Azam fined Tk 95,000 yesterday to three hotels and one fruit shop in Sagardi area of the city for adulteration, unhygienic condition and defect in weighing scale. RAB-8 source said that for the greater interest of the mass people the drive will be continued.
