Cage fish farming

It is quite encouraging to note that cage fish farming has changed the lot of many people in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district recently. According to a report of this newspaper yesterday, many youths have become financially solvent by turning to cage fish farming. Department of Fisheries gave them cages and provided them with fingerlings of monosex tilapia for rearing in the cages. Fish production has increased substantially in the country during the past few years. The remarkable success in fish production in the country is attributed to undertaking various fish-friendly programmes and technical training of fishermen and entrepreneurs.

In fact, fish meets the requirement for protein in human body. Bangladesh is a land crisscrossed by scores of rivers, marshes and canals. Fishes are available in these water bodies aplenty. Apart from natural breeding of fishes in different water bodies, fishes are grown by undertaking pisciculture projects. Scores of such projects have sprung up in different places of the country in recent times. Many people, particularly jobless rural youths, have become financially benefited through undertaking pisciculture. This has also contributed to employment generation considerably. Consumption of fish has also increased with the burgeoning population in the country. The current status of fish production should be maintained at any cost.

Cage fish farming should be promoted and extended throughout the country with the help of government organisations, NGOs and other key stakeholders. Providing institutional and organisational support, training facilities and technical support for sustainable fish farming are also needed. Without training and technical support increasing the knowledge of farmers to improve productivity and reduce risks is not possible.

Moreover, applied research in areas such as small indigenous fish farming in wetlands may need to be given particular attention, considering nutritional benefits among household members including children and women.

There is no alternative to exploiting the potential fully.

Many ponds and water bodies are lying unutilized throughout the country. Those should be brought under fish cultivation. Provision of bank loans on easy terms and conditions for fish culturists, particularly jobless youths, can give impetus in this regard. Poisoning of valuable fish in ponds and other water bodies makes newspaper headlines sometimes. Some rowdy elements are the perpetrators of such heinous crimes. These elements should be identified and punished. There is no alternative to boosting fish production further.
