Boy beaten to death on theft charge

A boy was allegedly beaten to death at a hatchery in Char Sreerampur village of Douhakhola union in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh on Monday. The victim was identified as Sagor Mia, 18, son of Shipon Mia from Natokghar Lane railway colony of Mymensingh town. Quoting eye-witnesses and local people, Delwar Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gouripur police station, said employees of Gauchhia Hatchery had caught Sagor allegedly stealing a water pump from the hatchery early on Monday.

On being informed, hatchery owner Akkas Ali arrived at the scene. He and his employees tied the boy to a concrete pillar near the hatchery and started beating him up with bamboo sticks, the OC said. The boy became unconscious, but the attackers continued beating him up, Delwar Ahmed said, quoting locals. The boy was not even given water, even though he repeatedly asked for it, he added.

Around 9.30am, the attackers put the boy in a battery-run auto-rickshaw for Mymensingh. He, however, died on the way.  Later, they took the boy’s body and hid it in a bush near the hatchery, Delwar Ahmed said. The boy sustained severe injuries all over his body, the OC added. The police raided the area after they were informed of the incident and found the body around 11am. The body was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The victim’s father, Shipon, has filed a case accusing some 12 persons, naming six, including Akkas Ali. No one has been arrested till filing of this report.
