There is no heat wave across the country. But with clouds hanging above, humidity has been high for the past few days, making people sweat. Bouts of load-shedding have increased their suffering in the city and elsewhere. Sweating Dhaka residents woke up to 96 per cent humidity and rumblings of clouds yesterday (Tuesday) morning.
Reports said some parts of the country, including the city, had the additional pain of load-shedding for unexplained reasons, when most people wanted a little relief under a whirling fan.
Meteorologists said the high humidity under a cloudy sky made the situation worse. Dhaka city recorded a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius. Although a little sprinkling of shower was measured by the rain gauge at the Dhaka Met Office at Agargaon till 6am yesterday, no rain was reported from elsewhere in the city. There were drops of rain on Monday afternoon.
Meteorologist Ruhul Kuddus said yesterday the stifling weather was due to the presence of high humidity in the air. This is normal in autumn, when the monsoon is preparing to withdraw early next month, he added. But the situation would improve with heavy rain, which is likely on Thursday and Friday, he said. It may reduce the humidity and bring some relief to the people.
The met forecast for the next 24 hours, beginning at 9am on Tuesday, said that light to moderate rain/thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty winds, is likely to occur at many places in Chittagong division, at a few places in Khulna, Barisal, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions, and one or two places in Rangpur and Rasjshahi divisions. Moderately heavy rain is likely at some places. Kuddus said there could even be rain later in the night.
