DU students submit memo for DUCSU poll
A group of general students along with some left leaning student organisations of Dhaka University (DU) submitted a memorandum to newly appointed acting Vice-chancellor of DU Prof. Akhtaruzzaman yesterday demanding immediate DUCSU poll .
The acting vice chancellor received the memorandum at his office.
Everyone wants DUCSU election including me and I will talk to other stake holders about this issue but I can’t give any specific date, the VC.
Masud Al Mahadi; student of mass communication and Journalism, also co ordinatior of DUCSU election movement said, “ 27 years have passed but our university is not taking proper steps for DUCSU poll but every year students are giving fee for DUCSU. We are being deprived and our cultural activities have been hampered. Nation is not getting new leaders.”
Umme Habiba Benojir, President of Student Fedaration of Bangladesh said , “We demanded immediate  DUCSU poll, VC and everyone continuously saying they want DUCSU poll too but why it is not happening?.”
Protesters and general students said they will continue protest for DUCSU poll and if university authorities don’t take immediate steps they will go to tougher programme.

New trust fund established at DU
A new trust fund titled “Professor Dr M Moinul Islam Trust Fund” has been established at the Department of Management of Dhaka University (DU).
Dr M Moinul Islam, former Professor of DU Management Department, handed over a cheque for Taka 10 lakh to DU Treasurer Prof Dr Md Kamal Uddin at a function on Monday at the Vice-chancellor’s office to set up the trust fund, said a DU press release.
VC Prof M Akhtaruzzaman, Acting Registrar Md Enamuzzaman and Dean of Business faculty Prof Shibli Rubayat-Ul Islam, Chairman of Management Department Prof Md Ali Akkas were present, among other, on the occasion.
Out of the income of this donation, every year one meritorious student will get gold medal for securing highest CGPA in BBA of Management
Department, the release said.
Prof Akhtaruzzaman thanked the donor for setting up the trust fund at DU and hoped that the students would be highly benefited and encouraged from this donation, it added.

Spanish Prof meets DU VC
Spanish Professor Amparo Porta Rivas on Monday called on Dhaka University (DU) Vice-chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman at the latter’s office on the campus.
During the meeting, they discussed the possibilities of strengthening ongoing joint collaborative academic and research programmes being conducted by the DU and different universities in Spain, said a DU release here.
The possibilities of expansion and modernization of Spanish Language Courses at the Institute of Modern Languages of DU were also discussed in the meeting, the release added.

IU goes on 6-day vacation from today
The Islamic University (IU) is going to a 6-day vacation from today on the occasion of Durga Puja, IU registrar office sources said on Tuesday.
IU registrar in charge S M Abdul Lotif said this over phone yesterday. S M Lotif said` the academic and administrative activities of the university will remain closed from September 27 to October 2’.
The residential hall of the university will not be closed during the vacation, he added.
After ending the vacation Durga Puja, the university’s academic and administrative activities will be resumed October 3 sources said.

China-Bangladesh study centre at DU
A new centre named “Centre for Chinese and Bangladesh Studies” has been established at Dhaka University (DU).
DU Vice-chancellor Professor Md Akhtaruzzaman and Yunnan University President Lin Wenxun jointly unveiled the plaque of this centre at a function held on Wednesday at the VC’s lounge, said a press release issued here on Thursday.
DU Pro-Vice-chancellor (academic) Prof Nasreen Ahmad, Treasurer Prof Kamal Uddin, Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts Prof Nisar Hossain, Director of the Institute of Modern Languages Prof Iffat Ara Nasreen Majid, Member of the Standing Committee of Yunnan Provincial Committee Li Xiaosan, Chinese Ambassador in Bangladesh Ma Mingqiang, Director General of Foreign Affairs Office of Yunnan Province Li Jiming and Chinese Director of Confucius Institute of DU Dr Zhou Mingdong Mindy were present, among others, on this occasion, the release added.
During the meeting, DU VC and Yunnan University authorities discussed the possibilities of forming an alliance titled “South Asia and Southeast Asia University Alliance” to develop academic and research activities of this region. The possibilities of establishing “China-Bangladesh Arts and Culture
Exchange Centre” at DU were also discussed in the meeting, the release added.
The DU VC said the friendly ties between Bangladesh and China have been prevailing for long.

PhD scholarship awardees meet UGC chief
University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh organised a briefing on Monday for nine teachers of Bangladesh Textile University, who have been awarded Ph.D scholarship on textile education in Turkey, says a  press release.
UGC arranged the programme on the eve of their pre-departure for Turkey at its auditorium.  Earlier, Council of Higher Education, Turkey signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UGC to award 20 scholarships, 14 for textile education and six in agriculture for higher studies in reputed universities of Turkey.
Professor Abdul Mannan, chairman, UGC presided over the meeting. Professor Dr Mohammad Yousuf Ali Mollah, member, UGC, Professor Dr M Shah Nowaz Ali, Member, UGC and Professor Engineer Mashud Ahmed, Vice-chancellor, Bangladesh Textile University spoke on the occasion.
