Exploring potentials of youth

Academicians at a discussion at Begum Rokeya University Rangpur (BRUR) have recently laid emphasis on enhancing extracurricular activities to save the youths from militancy and terrorism. They viewed this in the discussion arranged at launching ceremony of the three-day Literature, Culture and Indoor Sports Competitions-2017 at the university. Youths constitute the large segment of the population of the country. Country’s future depends largely on how they perform. They can steer the country ahead to the pinnacle of success, but they can also doom the country through their deeds.

Youths can engage themselves in extracurricular activities like reading books, newspapers and magazines, debating, recitation of poetry, musical performance, acting in dramas, games and sports, etc. By involving themselves in these activities they can derive unalloyed pleasure on the one hand and broaden their mental horizon on the other. These activities will also free them from evil propensities. The vast youth force of the country will bring dividends for the country if they are properly educated and groomed up.

Our youths should come out of the shackles of age-old colonial mentality. There are immense opportunities in different sectors of the country and the youths can explore those. IT Sector has flourished in the country in recent times. Many youths have changed their lot by turning to the same. The government should come up for further improvement of this sector. At the same time generation of employment in this sector should be given top priority.

A huge number of youths of the country are steeped in deep frustration triggered by sheer unemployment problem. Many are seeking solace in drug addiction. Absence of moral values is greatly responsible for this. Cultivation of moral values together with education can protect the youths from degeneration. It is the responsibility of the state to provide job-oriented education for the youths on the one hand, and instill moral values into their psyche on the other. Proper parental care, role of teachers of the educational institutions can also bring the desired results in this regard.

Our youths should not be completely dependable to government and private sector jobs alone. They should go for self-employment. After completion of education our youths can turn to self-employment like poultry farming, dairy farming, pisciculture, nursery business, apiculture, etc. In this way they can sustain themselves and create jobs for others also and contribute to economic development of the country.
