Paul Terry, the director of coaching at BCB’s National Cricket Academy, has believed the players who are in the High Performance Unit wouldn’t let Bangladesh down if they play in the national team.
But he thought chances are slim for those players to get into the national fold, considering the team has been performing so well at the moment.
“At the moment Bangladesh is playing very well in one-day cricket and they are a young side. Unless someone falls down and break the legs the opportunities are not that great,” he told the reporters yesterday.
“Obviously if you got an academy in England or Australia or anywhere every players will not play in the national team. It is very hard to play in the national team because it is the elite group and you have to accept it.”
“I am not sure how many will play from this group but all I can say is that they are very talented players. If they get an opportunity to play at some stage they won’t let Bangladesh down.”
In a bid to rejig Bangladesh cricket’s development programme, the BCB formed the High Performance Unit to fuel a players’ pipeline to feed the senior team. The HP Unit, began in June, is a training programme first established in 2004 under Richard McInnes. Shakib Al Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shahriar Nafees and Mehrab Hossain Jr were in the first batch, but over the last decade the BCB has been unable to restart the programme.
“We are into our 12th week. Everything has been going well. We will look to still run them and it’s just when we run them. Obviously we have been waiting to see when the itinerary is going to come out for all the leagues and NCL. “
Apart from HPU, the BCB also runs some other programmes like Players of National Interest (PONI) in order to keep the players fit and prepared for the national team. In PONI there are six or seven players who have been working intensively though players like Sohag Gazi is missing in the programme.
“We have got six to seven players and that’s very good. To be honest the players are provided by the national selectors. It comes from the national selectors and we hand it down,” said Terry.
